Rockin' Baja is one of those places that offer great seafood, burgers, fun appetizers, and good beer specials. I took my hubby there before the Padres game(it is a block from the stadium) and he got a 25 ounce Tecate for Five bucks, which in downtown San Diego is a steal.
You maybe able to find a groupon deal. We have used it several times to hit up more expensive restaurants.
Most of the tables are small high tops which can make it feel like you are an inconvenience. There are much longer tables for bigger parties, but the tables for two are, well, tooo small. Smaller than my dining table in fact. It isn't a big deal if you are not ordering much, but their menu suggests a much needed larger table.
Some of the appetizers listed are fried calamari and guacamole with chips. I have eaten here before at the Old Town location and the calamari is not to my standards and for 11 dollars you do not get much.(very greasy, to the point where it takes the flavor out of the squid). The guacamole is over-priced but it is decent.
Instead of doing the normal get your own meal and eat it, we decided to do the "Surf and Turf" Bucket, which includes crab legs, shrimp, chicken and carne asada. It is 22 per person but you can split the bucket by adding six bucks to it, which is what we did and it was well enough for two that way. It includes tortillas, but you must ask for them. Also with beans, rice, salsa, chips(there is a nice salsa bar), and honey butter.
The crab was perfect and the shrimp as well. My husband enjoyed the chicken but he said the carne asada tasted more like a piece of dry flank steak.(I don't eat red meat, so I cannot vouch for the opinion).
Overall the place is good, but it is a little bit expensive. I will go back because there are some other things that i want to try before I give my full opinion on their food. The service is great. Mostly women servers and completely good to taking care of you.
I prefer the Old Town location over the Gas Lamp because it is a more open floor plan.
Tip: If you're in on a game night, outside they offer cheap tacos and draft beer(Bud Light I think, but don't quote me on it).
